Flying to Batam

Hang Nadim International Airport (WIDD) is the main airport for Batam and handles GA alongside commercial traffic. The flight from Singapore’s Seletar Airport (WSSL) takes roughly 12 minutes and crosses the Strait of Singapore — one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, visible below as a constant procession of tankers and container ships.

Clearances and Procedures

Departing Singapore for Batam requires coordination with Singapore Control and Indonesian ATC. The route passes briefly through the Singapore FIR before entering the Ujung Pandang FIR. Ensure your transponder and radio are serviceable. A foreign aircraft entry approval (FAEA) from Indonesia’s DGCA is required — processing typically takes several business days, so plan ahead.

Customs and Immigration

Batam is a Free Trade Zone. GA arrivals clear customs and immigration at Hang Nadim. Have passports and the aircraft GenDec ready. The process is generally straightforward for tourist entry on most Western passports, which receive a visa on arrival.

What to See

Given the 12-minute flight, Batam works perfectly as a day trip from Singapore. Nongsa Point Marina on the northeast tip of the island has good waterfront restaurants and clear views back toward the Singapore skyline. Golfers will find several well-maintained courses with green fees far below Singapore equivalents.

For a scenic drive, the Barelang Bridges connect six islands in a chain across the southern part of the island group. The bridges were built by B.J. Habibie and are a point of local pride — the drive out and back with a seafood lunch at the waterfront makes for a relaxed afternoon.
