Flying to Koh Samui
Samui Airport (VTSM) is a privately-operated facility known for its open-air terminal with coconut palms growing through the roof — one of the most distinctive arrivals in the region. GA operations are handled alongside Bangkok Airways scheduled services; expect some sequencing delays around commercial departure banks.
Route Planning
The typical VFR route from the south enters Thai airspace via Hat Yai (VTSS). The Gulf of Thailand crossing to Koh Samui covers roughly 80 nm of open water — plan fuel reserves accordingly and file a float plan. A life raft or approved PFD is strongly recommended for overwater legs in this region.
Permits
Thailand requires an overflight and landing permit for foreign-registered GA aircraft. Allow at least 72 hours for processing and use a permit handling service unless you are familiar with the Thai DCA application process.
What to See
Chaweng Beach on the east coast is the hub for nightlife and beach activity. For something quieter, Lamai Beach to the south is more relaxed and better suited to an afternoon than the Chaweng strip. The island interior is surprisingly lush — rent a scooter and ride up to the central viewpoint for panoramic views over both coasts.
Ang Thong Marine National Park, accessible by day-boat from the main pier, covers 42 uninhabited islands and is a favourite snorkelling and kayaking destination. The park closes during the southwest monsoon.
