Permit process
Thailand requires both an overflight permit (FOTA) and a landing permit (FAEA) for foreign-registered aircraft. Thai Permit Services in Bangkok handles both in a single application. Submit at least 5 working days before departure — 72 hours is the minimum but cutting it close creates stress.
You’ll receive two approval documents: keep both on the iPad. ATC may ask for the permit reference number on first contact with Bangkok Control.
The airport
Samui (VTSM) is privately operated by Bangkok Airways. They are welcoming to GA but everything goes through their ground staff — there is no independent FBO. The handling fee is mandatory and non-negotiable but the staff are helpful.
The GA parking area is east of the terminal. You’ll be escorted by a buggy from the runway holding point — don’t taxi without the escort as the apron layout isn’t intuitive.
The famous open-air terminal with the coconut palms is genuinely impressive on arrival. Worth walking through even if you enter/exit via the GA side.
Fuel caution
AVGAS availability is inconsistent. Call Bangkok Airways Samui ground at least 24 hours before arrival to confirm 100LL is in stock. On my last visit there was a 3-day shortage — I had to arrange a fuel truck from the mainland at significant cost. Arrive with a comfortable reserve and have an alternate planned.
Gulf crossing
The 80 nm sea crossing from the peninsula should not be underestimated. File a float plan with someone ashore. Carry a PLB or an ELT that activates on immersion. The weather can change quickly over the Gulf — check the SIGMET/AIRMET for convective activity and don’t press into building cloud over water.
Accommodation
Stayed at Samui Palm Beach Resort on Chaweng — good location, clean rooms, helpful staff. Taxis from the airport are metered but negotiate a rate for the whole stay if you’re not renting a scooter. For something quieter, the south coast (Nathon, Ban Tai area) is largely untouched by the Chaweng tourism strip.
Night market
The Fisherman’s Village night market at Ban Bophut on Friday evenings is excellent — fresh seafood, local food stalls, relaxed atmosphere. About 20 minutes from Chaweng by scooter. Worth it over the tourist restaurants on the main strip.
